Air Filter History

Air filters came to life in the 1500s, when people working in hazardous environments began to wear respirators in their noses and mouths. These kept out potentially harmful substances in the form of gases, fumes and dust particles.

In 1799, a Prussian scholar named Alexander von Humboldt invented a breathing apparatus for mining. In 1848, American Lewis P. Haslett patented the earliest air-purifying respirator, which he called “Haslett’s Lung Protector”. It consisted of a one-way flap valve and a damp material such as wool that prevented the wearer from breathing in dust.

One of the most important air filter types, the HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter, II. It was invented at the end of World War II. Scientists and engineers from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and the U.S. Army Chemical Corporation worked together to develop what they called a “bulk shielding filter” to avoid breathing in radioactive chemicals while working on the Manhattan Project. Originally filters were made with asbestos, but that changed once how dangerous it was for these scientists to breathe asbestos. As World War II ended, the US government granted private industry manufacturers access to HEPA filter design, and HEPA filters quickly became popular.
